Concert: Johhny Hoy & The Bluefish

Brought to you by: Fugitive Productions

Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish bring their sometimes soulful, sometimes raunchy take on a great smorgasbord classics — Chicago Blues, Rockabilly, Rock’n’Roll, Country, Swing, good old R&B, and a bit of Cajun flavored off beat stuff — to Sanctuary in Maynard. This is a dance band from start to finish. Formed in 1991 and based in on Martha’s Vineyard, the band has released five CDs and performed around the world — as far as South Africa and Norway.

JOHNNY juggles a full life where he takes advantage of his many skills including stone masonry, fishing, antique dealing, farming. Somehow he manages to do all the gigs as well. He came to the Island in 1978, after soaking up Muddy Waters’ and Tom Waits’ shows as a teenager.

JEREMY BERLIN, the piano player has been with the band since the summer of ’93. He’s played duets with Bill Clinton and Carly Simon and toured the world with The Nina Simone Band. He’s not afraid of anything — and he plays it all. Jeremy’s right has plays the keyboard. His left hand plays the bass line, as the band has no bass player. (PS You’d never know.)

DELANIE PICKERING arrived on Martha’s Vineyard in her van at the age of 20, and for the first few months, didn’t tell anyone she played guitar. Now in her mid-20s, she plays with everyone and joined the band in 2018. A powerhouse blues player, she has the tone and authenticity of a seasoned performer and sings that way too.

CAMERON IGO is all of 19 years old with the youthful vibe and energy that comes with that! We found our new drummer at good moment — his parents were long-time fans, and he raps from behind the kit!

Brought to you by: Fugitive Productions

The Sanctuary stage will be hosting a band of Boston music legends on the first Thursday of the month through June. In April, Cheryl Aruda will be the featured guest performer.

When Cheryl Aruda was a kid, she crooned into a breadstick in her Italian grandmother’s kitchen, and thus began her career entertaining the masses with music, humor, and give-it-all-you’ve-got energy. A “theater kid” and Berklee grad who honed her craft in dive bars, Cheryl fronts her own group, “Dirty Blonde,” and has been a featured vocalist with blues, soul, and jazz bands on stages throughout New England (for far longer than she cares to admit)! In addition to signature gravelicious vocals and tremendous bandmates, Cheryl’s live performances and her CD, Unrequited Love Songsshowcase her skills as songwriter/lyricist . . . and, on one CD tune, tuba player!

Joe Bargar is a veteran of the New England music scene. SOLD OUT! The Love Dogs

Sad to say that the room is sold out. Not to worry. The Love Dogs will be back in the fall, and the spring, and the fall again . . . .

This may be the “smoothest” dance band around! Could sell out. Get your tickets early!

Take a red-hot horn—down and dirty. Add liberal amounts of barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano and stinging Fender guitar. Pour over a funky and swinging rhythm section that Blues Review magazine called “the best in the business,” and top it all off with a crazy and charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Season with a few years on the road, tearing up juke joints, festivals, and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada and on both sides of the Atlantic. Sound tasty? It’s a recipe for music and mayhem, for intensity and irreverence; it’s THE LOVE DOGS.

The Dogs combine elements of jump blues, New Orleans R&B and early rock ‘n’ roll into their own powerhouse sound. “It’s important to us to have fun, and sometimes even we don’t know what we’re gonna do next,” says lead vocalist and chief songwriter Eddie “Duato” Scheer. “We have a lot of humor in our music, and we love to surprise each other and make each other laugh.

“We’re all lifetime fans of blues, jazz, and R&B, and we have a real reverence for the music. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” The band’s lineup consists of Scheer, Alizon Lissance (keyboards, vocals), Myanna (alto/tenor sax, vocals), Rob Lee (tenor & baritone sax), Steve Monahan (bass), and Steve Brown (drums).

Blues Review notes: “If there was a Superbowl for crowd pleasing Rhythm & Blues, a photo of The Love Dogs would be on every Wheaties box in America.” Scheer sums it up by saying, “If this band doesn’t put a smile on your face, check your pulse, because you just might be dead!”
