Concert: Bruce Marshall Group with BJ Magoon & Driving Sideways

Bruce Marshall Group with BJ Magoon & Driving Sideways Brought to you by: Fugitive Productions

We’re thrilled to bring Bruce Marshall and BJ Magoon back to the Sanctuary stage. They both have a long tradition of performing in the area — especially Maynard!

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bruce Marshall has been a full-time musician his entire adult life with over 9,000 shows to his credit. He has opened for more than 200 national acts including James Brown, BB King, Chicago, The Beach Boys, Bryan Adams, Gregg Allman, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Commander Cody, Kenny Loggins, Ginger Baker, The Doobie Brothers, Boz Scaggs, and Joe Cocker.

With an affinity early on for blues, rock and ’60s pop, Marshall honed his chops in the gin mills of New England, starting with Whitecap, a popular area band that gigged nonstop for seven years. He put out his first album with his band, The Clue, in ’87 and went national with guitarist Toy Caldwell (Marshall Tucker guitarist/founder) in ’89, touring the US with Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Outlaws.

With many awards to his credit, in 2018, Marshall created his seventh record, “Borrowed Time,” to rave reviews.

Bruce Marshall (lead vocals, guitar, dobro), David Cournoyer (guitars, vocals), Steve Roberge (sax, harmonica, vocals), Glenn DiTommaso (bass), Pete Premo (drums)

BJ Magoon grew up in Acton and has been performing since his teens. At a ripe young age, BJ joined blues guitarist Luther “Georgia Boy” Johnson, a recent transplant from blues legend Muddy Water’s Band which led to performances with Muddy Waters and James Cotton, among others. In the ’80s, BJ formed Driving Sideways, whose repertoire of roots-based music includes Blues, Roots-Country Rock, Swing andSoul (with an emphasis on the groove). Over the years, he has opened for Bo Diddley, Delbert McClinton, Roy Buchanan, Lonnie Mack, The Holmes Brothers, Kenny Neal, Albert Collins, Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard & The Pleasure Kings, and Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters. In the ’90s, BJ produced and hosted a weekly radio show, “Blues On The Ceiling” and, for 14 years, he hosted the popular, weekly “Thursday Night Blues Jam” at The Acton Jazz Cafe.

First Thursdays: Joe Bargar & The Soul Providers featuring Cheryl Aruda

Joe Bargar & The Soul Providers featuring Cheryl Aruda

Brought to you by: Fugitive Productions

The Sanctuary stage will be hosting a band of Boston music legends on the first Thursday of the month through June. In April, Cheryl Aruda will be the featured guest performer.

When Cheryl Aruda was a kid, she crooned into a breadstick in her Italian grandmother’s kitchen, and thus began her career entertaining the masses with music, humor, and give-it-all-you’ve-got energy. A “theater kid” and Berklee grad who honed her craft in dive bars, Cheryl fronts her own group, “Dirty Blonde,” and has been a featured vocalist with blues, soul, and jazz bands on stages throughout New England (for far longer than she cares to admit)! In addition to signature gravelicious vocals and tremendous bandmates, Cheryl’s live performances and her CD, Unrequited Love Songsshowcase her skills as songwriter/lyricist . . . and, on one CD tune, tuba player!

Joe Bargar is a veteran of the New England music scene. Having grown up in Providence, RI, Joe had the opportunity to appear with such legendary acts as Roomful of Blues, Scott Hamilton, Duke Robillard, James Montgomery, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Living in New York City for decades, Joe played with performers including Sly &The Family Stone, Robbie Robertson, blues greats Otis Rush, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son Seals, and John Lee Hooker; and soul masters Percy Sledge, Clarence Carter, and Solomon Burke. He can also be heard on several recordings, including those by Diana Ross and “Late Show” bandleader Paul Shaeffer.

Fugitive Productions presents Britt Connors & Bourbon Renewal

Britt Connors & Bourbon Renewal

“When you have a wonderful instrument as supple as Britt’s mellifluous voice, it is a luxury that allows you to apply it to a wide array of styles. With a writing flair for beautifully lyrical compositions, it takes the possibilities even further. On her recently released third album, ‘Longitude,’ Britt Connors and the vehicle of her voice roam all over the map. She skillfully plumbs every style from soul, to folk, to pop, to gospel- and country-infused jazz.” — Nate Dow, former writer for the Boston Herald

Singer/Songwriter Britt Connors was born and raised singing in small-town West Boylston, MA before taking her studies to Ithaca College in NY. But, the lure of the talented Boston singer/songwriter scene and the thought that she may someday try her hand at songwriting brought her to Boston in 2001. Her acclaimed 2010 debut “The Bad Side of Good” was released under her maiden name of Britt Sawdon and blended blues, folk, and country with jazz voicings and pop sensibilities. By the time she released her second album, “Warmer Season” in 2014, she had met and formed her backing band, “Bourbon Renewal,” and had written the songs with that sound in mind, with tunes that are alternately rockin’, country, sweet, rootsy, and New-Orleans-street-parade. The record needed its own category, so they started calling it “Y’all-Ternative” music. Britt continued to expand into the band’s sound, calling on even more of some of Boston’s talented musicians for her 2020 album, “Longitude.” On this third record, she slips nimbly and authentically between soulful ballads, pop-rock, and gospel-infused Americana, reminiscent of recent feminist-inspired albums by Sara Bareilles and The Highwomen.

Britt and her bandmates are excited to be back at Sanctuary after their debut and album release party there last fall. They will be performing older and new songs with interesting new arrangements, featuring “Bourbon Renewal” bandmates: Ed Lucie on bass and harmony vocals, Phil Sargent on guitar, Bethany Weiman on cello, and Mike Connors on drums.

Fugitive Comedy featuring Carolyn Plummer (Headliner) with Jay Whittaker, Brieana Woodward and Host Tim McKeever

Fugitive Comedy hosts some of the best and brightest comics working in the Boston area and nationally. The comedians who have joined us have appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Conan, David Letterman, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Last Comic Standing, America’s Got Talent, Comedy Central, The Jim Jeffries Show, Comedy Bang! Bang! Live! Podcast, NPR’s Commonwealth Journal, Lifetime’s Girls Night Out — and have opened for numerous well-known comedians in clubs around the nation.

Carolyn Plummer (Headliner)

God help us. Some comics rely on the monumental events of the day or the faux pas of the rich and famous. Not Carolyn. She pulls material from the hum-drum, day-to-day monotony of the life of everyman — and she does it well. Carolyn learned early on that she could lament or she could make fun. Possessing an uncanny ability to introspectively pull from places most of us hide, Carolyn puts a nail through the heart of whiners, self-loathers, and the self-sorry of the world and makes the average seem hilarious and larger than life. Most of all, Carolyn’s twisted perception of our common existence leaves audiences hysterically shaking heads in agreement with her assessment that the world is indeed a very funny place.

Jay Whittaker
Jay is a comedian, actor, podcaster hailing from Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Boston! He was recently one of the featured comedians on the DryBar Comedy Live tour, which was in over 70 comedy clubs nationwide and received millions of views on YouTube. He has appeared on the Disney Channel, Food Network, Lifetime Channel. He’s also received the “Best of Fest” award at the Big Pine Comedy Festival. Last summer, Whittaker filmed his secone comedy. Jay is a loving father, husband, and Air Force veteran.

Brieana Woodward
Brieana’s a lifelong New Englander who has appeared in clubs and venues throughout the East Coast, but she loves to tell jokes all across the country (having checked off 29 states so far in her comedy travels). She won second place in the 2022 Funniest Person in Massachusetts contest, and was a semi-finalist in the 2021 Boston comedy Festival Contest. Her rapid-fire punches, high-voltage energy, and raw talent are her dynamite recipe to blow away any audience!

Tim McKeever (Host)
Based in Western Mass, Tim has entertained crowds all over the country and performed at some of the area’s top comedy clubs including Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and MGM and has opened for Nick DiPaolo, Lenny Clarke, and Jimmie Walker.

Doors open at 7pm • Performance starts at 8pm

Fugitive Music presents The Lori Z Jazz Quintet

The Lori Z Jazz Quintet:

Lori Zuroff (vocals)
Molly Flannery (piano)
Bill McCormack (bass)
Bill Vint (saxaphone and flute)
Miki Matsuki (drums)

Lori, Molly, and Bill, superb performers in their own right, get together weekly, fine tuning their skills — and getting down and dirty playing the music they love! For this evening’s performance, they add the sparkle of drums and sweet horns to perform music from the 1920s “early days” of jazz to present-day interpretations of jazz standards, blues, and contemporary music. They are at home honoring great players and composers — from Ellington to Jobim to Bacharach — and some of the great singers they admire, including Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, and Etta James. In November 2020, Lori released her debut jazz CD, “Ladybug,” featuring these fabulously talented musicians.

Lori Zuroff (vocals)
Lori has been singing with various rock, blues, R&B, and jazz bands for more 25 years. She has performed with both small and large bands in venues all over Boston including the Chick Singer Night at Johnny D’s and the Burren in Somerville, and The Mad Monkfish in Cambridge. In addition to leading this group, she also headlines The Lola Sweet Band. Lori studied jazz vocals for several years with Boston’s own jazz divas, Rebecca Parris and Dominique Eade, and with Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton in New York.

Bill Vint (saxaphone and flute)
Originally from Tucson, Bill began playing with jazz, blues, and Latin bands in nightclubs and venues while still in high school. As a student at Berklee College of Music, where he studied woodwinds with Joe Viola and Bill Pierce, he performed in many of the school’s most prestigious ensembles including Herb Pomeroy’s Concert Jazz Orchestra and the Thelonious Monk Ensemble. He has performed in bands backing Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Johnny Mathis, Josh Groban, Bernadette Peters, and John Mayer, among many others. He has done big band/swing tours with the Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey, and Harry James orchestras in addition to playing in the pit of many touring productions of Broadway musicals.

Molly Flannery (piano)
Molly is known for her distinctive touch on the piano, her melodic improvisations, and her ability to groove in jazz, Latin, and Brazilian idioms. After studying composition, improvisation and theory at Yale, Molly began her performing career in Japan where she appeared frequently at local clubs. When she eventually settled in Boston, she studied jazz with Ran Blake, Charlie Banacos, Kenny Werner, Harvey Diamond, and Doug Johnson. Her CD releases include ”Slow Dance at the Asylum” and “Riding the Bull.”

 Bill McCormack (bass)
Bill grew up in Ireland and started playing trumpet and bass at an early age. Before moving to the US, he played with many of Ireland’s top musicians including singers Honor Heffernan and Christine Tobin, and Stocktons Wing, and was a member of renowned jazz guitarist Louis Stewarts’ regular quartet. He continues to hold down the groove on a diverse Boston music scene playing both upright and electric bass with many of the area’s best musicians.

Miki Matsuki  (drummer)
Born in Matsuyama, Japan, Miki moved to the US to study jazz at the Berklee College of Music. In 2000, Miki’s band was selected “Best of Berklee.” She has performed and recorded in various musical settings including soundtrack work, radio and television, a tour of Korea, and so much more. Miki has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Joanne Brackeen, George Garzone, John Tchicai, Darren Barrett, Frank Lacy, Cecil Brooks, Dave Bryant, and Stan Strickland, among others.
